School status alert for January 9 and 10
Good evening West Salisbury Families, this is your child’s principal Mr. Binns. I would like to begin by saying Happy New Year to all of you as this will be the first automated call for 2024. I hope you have had an enjoyable and restful weekend, by spending time with friends and family. As we prepare for a new school week, here are a few announcements. We are pleased to let you know that our students have gotten into a routine of being back and in school and we ask that you continue to encourage your child to comply with their teacher’s policies, procedures and expectations, as well as following all rules on the bus. When your child is able to do this, it creates a welcoming and safe environment here at the Tiger’s Den and on the bus. Next we want to continue to place a huge emphasize attendance and it’s importance. We have had a number of absences lately and when your child accumulates absences it impacts their ability to access the lessons that are being taught and they miss valuable instruction. When a student accumulates 5 or more absences the parent will receive an attendance intervention plan that must be administered. This AIP is implanted county wide, so please parents, make every effort for your child to not only be here at school, but have them here on time. Remember your child depends on you. We appreciate your attention to this important part of school. On Tuesday, January 9th, at 7:00 p.m. at Long avenue is a general board meeting. Parents can sign up for public comments at the board’s website from January 2nd – January 8th. This week Wicomico County Public Schools will officially announce the (3) finalist for each school for teacher of the year, and although we have announced our finalist and presented them with gifts from West Salisbury the board will officially announce them as well, but we want to congratulate once again Mrs. Kerri Corron Kurten (Kindergarten Teacher), Mrs. Lauren Gilmore (1st Grade Teacher), and Dr. Harlen Eagle (Physical Education Teacher) for being West Salisbury Elementary’s finalist for our teacher of the year. We want to wish them all the best as each school’s teacher of the year will be named at the end of this week by the Teacher of the Year committee. We are proud of all of our teachers. This coming Thursday, January 11th West Salisbury will be recognized for being a part of the World Record for Cup Stacking. Our school participated in the Cup Stacking program and we were recognized along with two other schools in Wicomico County for taking the challenge of cup stacking and were a part of the record number of participants in the elementary school level. Thank you to Dr. Eagle for having the vision to have our students participate and make history in something so fun and cool. Finally, a friendly reminder that our MCAP ELP window will open for our students who do not speak English or who have limited English proficiency this week. Well that is it for now, I hope that you enjoy the rest of your amazing Sunday afternoon and we look forward to seeing all of our tiger cubs here on time bright eyed and busy tailed. We are the Tiger Nation. Tigers let me hear you roar. ROAR!!!

Good Sunday Evening, West Salisbury Tiger Families! This is Mrs. Harrington, your Dean of Students, and I'm delighted to bring you some roaring updates from West Salisbury Elementary. We trust that everyone is enjoying a relaxing, healthy, and safe winter break. A quick reminder – our tiger cubs will be back to school on Wednesday, January 3rd. And as we return from this break, kindly remind your children not to bring any toys or electronics to school. Now, let's talk about something crucial – attendance. Attendance is crucial for your child's education. Every absence and tardiness adds up, impacting your child's learning. We emphasize this because your child's education is invaluable. Our Tiger Cubs deserve the best, and that starts with consistent attendance. Your efforts to ensure they attend school on time are deeply appreciated. Together, let's provide them with the outstanding education they deserve. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students' success. Looking forward, we're diving into iReady and Map Testing shortly after the break. It's the time for our incredible students to showcase their skills and let their brilliance shine! Stay tuned for more details after the new year. That wraps up our updates for now. We extend our warm wishes for a safe and joyous new year. We are so excited for the learning, laughter, and unforgettable moments that lie ahead at West Salisbury Elementary as we roar into 2024. Now- Tigers let me hear you ROAR--ROAR!!!

Congratulations to last week's Attendance Tigers! These classes achieved the highest attendance rates per grade level, and we applaud their dedication. Well done! Additionally, a big congratulations to Mrs.Shultie's class for receiving the highest attendance percentage in November! These students will be rewarded with tokens from the book vending machine – a fantastic way to incentivize and celebrate their commitment to attendance. Way to go! We'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of attendance. Regular attendance is crucial for your child's education. Even being just 5 minutes late every day results in missing 3.4 days of instruction. If lateness extends to 15 minutes daily, it amounts to missing 10.3 days, and a 30-minute delay daily leads to a staggering 20.7 days of missed instruction. To put it in perspective, if your child misses 2 school days a month, they miss 20 days a year, translating to a loss of 30 hours of math instruction and 60 hours of reading and writing instruction. Every absence and tardiness adds up, affecting your child's learning. We emphasize this because your child's education is invaluable. Our Tiger Cubs deserve the best, and that begins with consistent attendance. Your efforts to ensure they attend school on time are deeply appreciated. Together, let's provide them with the outstanding education they deserve. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students' success.
